LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA IN
EXERCISE REFERRAL

This qualification is designed to provide learners with the knowledge to ensure safe and effective exercise programming for patients with a number of medical conditions and common reasons for referral onto a community-based exercise referral scheme. With this qualification you are able to build contracts and relationships with GP’s, Leisure Centres, NHS and other related bodies/organisations.
An Exercise Referral Instructors role includes:
• Assess, monitor and manage risk to clients arising from exercise participation throughout the referral period
• Analyse information relating to individual clients with regard to safe and effective programme design
• Identify, agree and review short, medium and long term goals to ensure the effectiveness of exercise programmes
• Promote a range of physical activity opportunities in accordance with the needs and health status of the clients
• Tailor progressive exercise appropriate to the medical condition using results from the physical/exercise assessments, medical information, national guidelines and client goals and objectives
Learners must hold either a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym/Exercise to Music or Aqua) or equivalent (including qualifications which give entry to the REPs Physical activity Advisor category) or one of the following:
• Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
• Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork
• Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga
Unit 1 - Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
Unit 2 - Professional Practice for Exercise Referral Instructors
Unit 3 - Understanding Medical Conditions for Exercise Referral
Unit 4 - Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme
Unit 5 - Planning exercise referral programmes with patients
Unit 6 - Instructing exercise with referred patients
• *Theory paper 1 (40 multiple choice exam questions with a pass mark of 28)
• *Theory paper 2 (40 multiple choice exam questions with a pass mark of 28)
• Practical assessment
• Learner Achievement Portfolio (LAP)
*Theory exams for this course are the same as those for the Level 3 Personal Training qualification. If you already hold a valid Level 3 Personal Training qualification you will be exempt from the theory exams for this course. If you only hold a Level 2 Certificate, then you must complete the theory exams.
This qualification provides progression on to the Level 4 Certificate Low Back PainManagement and Level 4 Certificate in Obesity and Diabetes Management.
